    Pool Electrical Safety Guide

Residential pools combine electricity and water — the most dangerous combination possible. Every year, fatal electric shock incidents occur in private pools due to incorrect installations. This guide explains mandatory pool electrical requirements per international standards and the Egyptian Electrical Code.

    Quick Answer

Zone 0 inside the pool: zero electrical equipment allowed. Zone 2: IP44 minimum. Egyptian code requirements for home pools — and why a separate earthing system is mandatory.

    Pool Electrical Safety Requirements

    • Protection zones: IEC 60364-7-702 divides pool surroundings into 3 zones. Zone 0 (inside water): only voltage ≤ 12 V AC or 30 V DC is permitted. Zone 1 (up to 2 m from edge): minimum IP44, IP65 preferred.
    • IP ratings: underwater lighting must be IP68 (permanently submersible). Pool pumps in pump rooms require minimum IP55. Outlets around pools must be IP44 with exclusively 30 mA RCD.
    • Earthing and equipotential bonding: all metallic parts in the pool zone (titanium ladder, metal pool edge, pump housing) must be connected by a copper bonding conductor to the main earthing point.
    • RCD protection: all pool circuits must be fed through a maximum 30 mA RCD — not 100 mA or 300 mA. The 30 mA RCD is what saves lives in water shock events.
    • Isolation transformer: for underwater lighting, strongly recommended to use a 12 V or 24 V isolation transformer rather than direct 220 V feed — even with an RCD in place.
    • Fatal mistakes: standard outlets without IP44 rating near the pool, missing metal bonding, underwater lighting at 220 V, and no RCD on the pump circuit.
    • Annual inspection: a specialist electrician should inspect all pool electrical systems annually — including measuring earth resistance, testing the RCD, and checking cable insulation.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a regular electrical outlet near the pool?

No — never. Outlets near the pool (within 2 m) must be minimum IP44 (splash-proof), exclusively protected by a 30 mA RCD, and mounted at appropriate height. Standard outlets are lethal in this environment.

    Is underwater LED lighting safe?

Yes, if it's IP68 rated and designed for aquatic use, and fed from a low-voltage isolation transformer (12 V or 24 V). Dry-use lighting installed underwater is extremely dangerous even if it temporarily withstands the water.

What's the difference between earthing and bonding in a pool context?

Earthing connects electrical equipment parts to ground to dissipate faults. Equipotential bonding connects all metallic parts surrounding the pool together — its purpose is preventing voltage differences that cause shock even without a direct electrical fault.

Does pool electrical installation need special licensing in Egypt?

Installation requires a licensed electrician, and the electrical drawing should be approved by the supervising engineer. There is no separate pool licence in Egypt, but negligence regarding requirements exposes you to legal liability if incidents occur.

What does residential pool electrical installation cost in Cairo?

Complete electrical installation for a residential pool (underwater lighting + pump + panel + RCD + bonding) costs EGP 8,000–20,000 depending on pool size and component quality. This is a safety investment that cannot be compromised.
